The library is a welcoming, inclusive environment for learners, staff, and parents. It is open daily from 8:15am for homework, borrowing, and reading. We also welcome learners at both lunch breaks for games, reading, and borrowing.

Before school, learners may read, borrow books, or bring in their iPad to work on homework tasks. Parents are also welcome before school. We are happy to sign up parents as borrowers to enjoy access to the collection.

The library is staffed by a qualified Teacher-Librarian, Ms Edwards, and assisted by Teacher-Aide, Mrs Denner.

The library is well-resourced with an extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction resources. We also offer access to e-library services: the Education Qld eBook library accessed through SORA app, Redelearn - Curriculum linked research site, and Storybox library for fun read-alouds. All e-library links are provided on the library's homepage.

Term 1, 2026: Please note, we are currently operating out of our mini-library, just down from the Admin Office, due to major roof work happening on our library. We are still open daily before school and during lunch breaks, but only for returning and borrowing books. We expect to be back to the big library sometime early in Term 2.

Cosmo, the library dog, is a regular visitor to the library. He usually visits one or two days a week. Cosmo is a Labradoodle/Moodle cross and has a non-shedding coat. He enjoys listening to children read to him and enjoys curling up in his favourite chair during lessons.

All classes from Prep to Year 3 visit the library weekly to return and borrow books and participate in information and digital literacy lessons with the Teacher-Librarian. These lessons incorporate investigating information sources, evaluating information from both online and print sources, conducting effective searches, and developing digital citizenship skills.

Library Events

Book Fairs

Library Events.jpg

Two book fairs are held each year, one in Term 2 and one in Term 4. In 2026, we will be holding one Book Fair with Where the Wild Things Are Bookstore and one Scholastic Book Fair. Both fairs are an important fundraising opportunity for our library, with commission from all sales coming back to the library.

Author Visits

Author visits are offered throughout the year in association with Where the Wild Things Are Bookstore. We have hosted several authors over the last few years, including Andy Griffiths during Book Week last year. Learners have the opportunity to have books signed by the author and hear them talk about their writing process.

Author visits inspire students to develop a love of reading and writing by connecting them with real-world storytellers, while also enhancing literacy skills and creativity through engaging, firsthand experiences.

Book Week

The Children's Book Council of Australia's Book Week takes place annually in August all around Australia. At JHSS, our learners participate in many fun activities and competitions during the week, culminating in a costume parade representing favourite stories.

Indigenous Literacy Book Swap

Our school participates in this event most years to raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The ILF Great Book Swap helps provide culturally relevant books to children in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, where access to bookstores and libraries may be limited. Many of these books are written in First Languages, allowing children to see themselves and their cultures reflected in the stories they read.

Readers Cup

The Readers Cup is a team-based reading competition run by the Children's Book Council of Australia that encourages students to read widely and engage deeply with literature. Students work in teams to read a selected list of books and then compete in a quiz-style event, answering detailed questions about the texts. The competition promotes a love of reading, strengthens comprehension skills, and fosters teamwork in a fun and challenging environment.
